To say that a band is "an institution" is a retardedly overused cliche, but the
term couldn't be more apt for San Francisco's Hightower. There's hardly a
skate-related event that goes down in The City without Hightower present, and
shutting it down as though their lives depended on it. They've spent a decade
driving their van across the country, carving out their well-deserved place at
the top of Skate Rock's heap, and, if anything, their new album, Tower to the
People, only reinforces their commitment to beers, bowls, backyards, BBQs, and
good times.
But that doesn't even begin to describe Hightower's near stranglehold on the
hearts and minds of the folks who come out in droves, night after night, to see
Dave, Jake, and Shane beat themselves bloody. "Street metal" may be how they
used to describe themselves, but Hightower's music has grown and evolved to
represent the dudes' weirdly eclectic interests. Harsh thrash and ambient prog
come together seamlessly, while vintage metal riffs chug merrily alongside
grating punk. It's not so much that Hightower wears a lot of hats that don't go
together, but rather that the music they make has become a reflection of the
pins crowding for space on their jean jackets.
Tower to the People is the soundtrack for wizards spitting beer on each other.
